This weekend I attended the NFCA Coaches Clinic at Horse Shoe Casino and was able to learn from several top leaders in the game. Karen Weekly (University of Tennessee) shared her philosophy on bunting and slapping. The first idea she discussed was to “deaden the ball” when laying down a bunt. Karen has her player’s focus on using the last five inches of the bat to bunt the ball. She tapes the end of the bat so her players can see what part of the bat to use to bunt. If you’ve ever taken a full swing and hit the ball off the end of the bat you know it doesn’t go far! Try it for yourself. Use the last 5 inches to lay the bunt down.
